Workshop: developing a roadmap for devon-based SMEs to achieve net-zero

Dr Rong Huang, Mr Shaihan Mohamed Lafir and Dr Stavros Karamperidis hosted the third workshop for the project, "developing a roadmap for devon-based SMEs to achieve net zero". Strong interest was secured from local SMEs and the feedback received was exceptional. They discussed potential funding opportunities and how the University could assist local SMEs to achieve net-zero.
Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) conference
10–11 September 2024
Dr Stavros Karamperidis was a keynote presenter at the SMI conference, "Driving Decarbonisation, Digitalisation and Autonomy – the Role of the Maritime Supply Chain and Marine Science and Technology", in Birmingham where he demonstrated work that he has done with PBS colleagues. The presentation was titled "How to develop a Green Corridor." Dr Karamperidis was also invited to a panel discussion where driving decarbonisation was discussed with several experts from the maritime transport sector. More than 250 senior government and company representatives attended the event.
Workshop: developing a roadmap for Devon-based SMEs to achieve net-zero

Dr Rong Huang, Dr Stavros Karamperidis and Mr Mohamed Shaihan Lafir organised a workshop on a net-zero roadmap for Devon SMEs. The workshop was well received by local businesses, and fruitful discussions were held. The research team agreed to meet again in early September to monitor progress. As part of the workshop, we had the pleasure to host two top academics who shared their experience and knowledge with the participants:
Professor Sachin Kumar Mangla from O.P. Jindal Global University, India and Plymouth Business School, UK gave a presentation titled "Introduction to the Path to Net-Zero and Sustainability" and Professor Dr Yigit Kazancoglu, Vice Rector, Department of Logistics Management, Yasar University, Turkiye gave a presentation titled "Sustainable Supply Chains: Achieving Carbon Neutrality".
4th International Conference on Sustainable, Circular Management and Environmental Engineering

The Maritime Transport Research Group and PBS co-organised the 4th International Conference on Sustainable, Circular Management and Environmental Engineering (ISCMEE), in Izmir, Turkey in collaboration with Yasar University and Lund University. The conference attracted global interest with participation from more than 40 countries.
International Association of Maritime Economist Conference, Valencia 2024

The Ƶ had three participations this year at the International Association of Maritime Economist (IAME) Conference in Valencia. IAME is a key conference with global representation, and it is an excellent opportunity to exchange recent research for anyone involved with the research area of maritime economics and logistics. Four papers were presented, three from Dr Karamperidis and one from Mr Yeo. Dr Tuck also attended the conference. The conference attracted the best academics in the field of maritime economics, logistics and relevant subjects.

AXSMarine data presentation and guest lecture
May 2024
Steve Fletcher (CCO) and Oliver Chaplin (Sales Executive) from AXSMarine have visited and demonstrated how Ƶ students can benefit from AXSMarine's quality data. Oliver had been eager to give back to the University, where he graduated two years ago.
Oliver began his presentation with a brief introduction about AXSMarine's data quality process, explaining the importance of accurate information when dealing with the complexities of the maritime industry and the power of digitisation in improving the customer's experience.
For the students, the guest lecture was highlighted by a demonstration of how AXSMarine can help them make the most of their education and future career paths, and the tools required to succeed professionally.
The response from the students was positive and they were particularly interested in the live demonstrations Oliver provided. Overall, the visit was a success and Oliver felt great being able to give back to his alma mater.
Steve also provided some insights from his long career in shipping and both Steve and Oliver had a fruitful discussion with the students.
Pilot study on establishing a UK Singapore and ASEAN Green Shipping Corridor (UKSGSC)
May 2024
The Ƶ's Maritime Transport research group are running a UK–Singapore green shipping corridor study. This will facilitate and strengthen cooperation between the UK, Singapore and ASEAN to promote greater trade relations and understanding of how a green shipping corridor could reduce emissions and improve economic growth.
The work submitted to the British High Commission in Singapore was well received.
Portugal Shipping Week
6–10 May 2024
Dr Stavros Karamperidis was invited to present findings of his work at Portugal Shipping Week 2024. His presentation was titled "Sustainability transition in maritime sector and the knowledge skills gap". The presentation was received with great interest from the audience at the largest maritime event in Portugal. A fruitful discussion was generated on a novel topic that is at the core of the sustainability transition that the maritime transport sector is facing, while Dr Karamperidis managed to demonstrate the strengths of his research team in terms of maritime decarbonisation and sustainability.
Freight Innovation Cluster (FIC) first birthday celebration

A leading initiative in the Department for Transport’s Freight Innovation Fund programme was materialised by Connected Places Catapult, the Freight Innovation Cluster (FIC).
The FIC is a robust network of members operating in the freight industry, which regularly engage and work collaboratively towards joint opportunities.
With more than 320 organisations, encompassing industry, academia, local authorities and larger players, the FIC is far from being only a community. It presents itself as a vibrant environment where member organisations connect, showcase their challenges, seek solutions through meaningful commercial partnerships, as well as co-design joint processes and ventures.
Dr Stavros Karamperidis was invited to participate in a panel on the topic of "Upskilling and Knowledge Sharing". The panel was moderated by Ben Garratt, Deputy Director – Public Affairs and Innovation Policy Lead at Logistics UK. The panel has generated an interesting discussion with the audience and further steps will be conducted in the near future to tackle the issue of upskilling and knowledge sharing.
Navigating the nexus: addressing hybrid threats in maritime and space environments

The
Centre for Seapower and Strategy (CSS)
, in collaboration with the Royal Navy Strategic Studies Centre (RNSSC) and sponsored by BAE Systems, co-organised a workshop on the complexities of hybrid threats. The workshop focused on the multifaceted landscape of hybrid threats in the maritime and space domains, where traditional and non-traditional security risks converge. It marked the first gathering of military professionals, members of the defence and security industry, and university postgraduate and undergraduate students specialising in international shipping, cyber crime, terrorism and security, applied strategy and international security, and criminology.
The workshop was led by Dr. Fotios Moustakis, Director of the CSS, and Dr. Kevin Rowlands, Director of the RNSSC. Also contributing from the CSS were Dr. Stavros Karamperidis, Dr. Brendan Brookshaw, Ken Livingstone, and Dr. Sean Looney. The event fostered dialogue and knowledge exchange through brief presentations by Professor Markos Trichas and Dr. Damian Terrill of BAE Systems, Professor James Bergeron, Captain Panagiotis Tripontikas (HN) of NATO MARCOM, Professor Vasileios Syros of the United Service Institution of India, Dr Chris Lavers, Britannia Royal Naval College, University of Lincoln and Jack Sharpe, PhD student at the Ƶ.

The Head of Maritime Transport Research Group (Dr Stavros Karamperidis) hosted DP World's Vice President Commercial & Supply Chain, UK, John Trenchard, for an insightful guest lecture titled "Unlocking UK ports' potential to cut carbon across international supply chains". Several students and local stakeholders (including Plymouth and South Devon Freeport and Port of Plymouth) attended the lecture in person and online, which was followed by an interactive Q&A session.

Professor Dong-Wook Song, Head of Shipping Management and Logistics and Port Management and Director of Academic Publications at World Maritime University, was invited to visit the Ƶ (his alma mater).
During his visit, he delivered an insightful guest lecture where, with the Arnold J. Toynbee (1889–1975) framework in mind, he reviewed trends that are recently affecting industries and challenges that they face within the context of global trading patterns and sea-based logistics.
Pilot study on establishing a UK Singapore and ASEAN Green Shipping Corridor (UKSGSC)

The Maritime Transport Research Group (MTRG) conducted UK’s first long-distance study on establishing a Green Shipping Corridor (GSC) between the UK and Singapore as a gateway to ASEAN. The study was sponsored under the UK-SG Green Economy Framework and funded by the UK High Commission in Singapore.
GSCs have grown in popularity since their inception in 2021 under the Clydebank Declaration. First-mover countries and governments have adopted GSCs as a key strategy to accelerate maritime decarbonisation. MTRG research team conducted the study in the UK, Singapore and Malaysia and analysed the main container trade lane between Asia – and Europe services.
With over 60% of the new container new build vessels being dual-fuelled, the study found that the UK has to invest in alternate-fuel bunkering infrastructure supported by regulations and a shift in policy by the Government to lead GSC development. The study proposed a Trade and Investment UK-Singapore Green Shipping Corridor (UKSGSC) to strengthen the UKs leading position as a global financial and services hub, together with Singapore. This suggestion is expected to increase the UK’s trade and investment prospects to access the wider ASEAN markets.
The study highlighted the MTRG and PBS’s strong links within the maritime industry and commitment to furthering sustainable maritime economics. Several key stakeholders participated in the study (e.g. DfT, UKHO, etc).
