About Arya
Arya Iwantoro is a Senior Research Consultant in Coastal Modelling at ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ and has >8 years’ experience in developing and applying numerical models to simulate hydro-morphodynamic processes in coastal systems. Arya completed his PhD in Physical Geography from Utrecht University in 2022, where he developed numerical model to investigate hydro-morphodynamic of channel networks in delta plains. After completing his PhD, he conducted 2.5 years postdoctoral research at University of Exeter (UK) where he evaluated the impacts of human pressures and climate change in mangrove ecosystems, with a focus on hydro-morphodynamic processes, mangrove ecosystem stability, and carbon soil dynamics. In this project, Arya developed an advanced numerical model, integrating hydro-morphodynamic processes, mangrove forest dynamics and carbon sequestration dynamics.
Throughout his PhD and post-doctoral research, Arya has also provided technical consultancy for Indonesian government agencies and private-sector clients, delivering insights on coastal sediment dynamics and coastal engineering feasibility studies using numerical modelling.
In 2025, Arya started working at CMAR consultancy group within the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ. His time is divided between conducting commercial consultancy projects through CMAR and supporting coastal research projects within the Coastal Processes Research Group. In both consulting and research activities, Arya applies state-of-the-art numerical modelling tools such as Delft3D, XBeach and SWAN to simulate hydrodynamic circulation, wave-current interactions, wave-driven processes, and morphodynamic processes. His work is integral to assessing the long-term stability of coastal and estuarine environments, informing coastal engineering feasibility studies, and advancing nature-based solutions.Â
