Born and raised in St Ives, Cornwall, a coastal county in South West England, Danny Fox’s paintings conjure heartfelt and unflinching portrayals of home, history and myth.

Using bold, near-crude passages of flat vibrant colour infused with quick, worn-out mark-making, Fox’s lyrical and expressionistic style enfuses local buildings, landscapes and townsfolk with the mysticism of local folklore and symbolism. Captured with tragedy, promise, heat, violence, affection and humour, his work celebrates the authenticity and colour of lives lived against the grain. Taking the position of both observer and participant, his work exudes the emotional realism of lived experience, from good cheer to cold and bitter detachment.

His work references time spent living in Los Angeles, road trips taken across England and the wild and wonderful scenes of coastal Britain, from Cornish landmark St. Michaels Mount to the historical tin mines in St. Ives, Gunnard’s Head Hotel to Battery Rocks. Often overlaid with snippets of text and recurring iconography, his work pays homage to historical painters and paintings that have come before him.
