Screen Queens is a series of female led and directed films that seek to engage with audiences by amplifying women’s voices and visibility and sharing their stories. The series is programmed by the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Women’s Network in collaboration with the arts and culture programme and is open to everyone.
Laura Harris, Chair of the Women's Network, explains why she chose these films:
" offers a compelling exploration of women’s rights and the emotional gravity of making a critical decision for the future of a community. I feel that it creates a space that invites the audience to engage fully and confront the truth directly, without filters or metaphors. I think it raises an important question: why would anyone remain in a society that systematically inflicts harm upon them?
skilfully blends fiction with history. Viola Davis is a tour de force, leading a gripping story of conflict set against the backdrop of the slave trade. The film offers a fresh (female) take on the traditional male-dominated warrior epic genre.
is an intense film that places women at the forefront, highlighting the significance of persistence, resistance, and the power of using your voice to expose truths that can transform the world. I believe it effectively captures a pivotal moment in history that sparked the rise of the #MeToo movement. "
